‘Friendly Fire’: Incompetent Military Blunder Takes Down Two U.S. Navy Pilots Over Red Sea

Two U.S. Navy pilots were shot down over the Red Sea on Saturday in what the military  is referring to as a “friendly fire incident,” the U.S. Military announced in a statement. Both pilots survived the so-called accidental shoot-down after they successfully from their aircraft, with one of them suffering minor injuries.

The incident comes amidst heightened tensions in the Red Sea due to Iran-backed attacks on shipping in the crucial sea corridor. Attacks have primarily been launched by Houthi rebels, whom have persisted despite the presence of U.S. and European naval assets patrolling the area.

The U.S. Military launched a series of airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen on Saturday, though details of the operation have not been provided to the public.

U.S. Central Command announced that the downed aircraft was a two-seat F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet assigned to the “Red Rippers” of Strike Fighter Squadron 11 out of Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. The F/A-18 had taken off from the deck of the USS Harry Truman aircraft carrier, according to U.S. Central Command.

On December 15, Central Command confirmed that the Truman had deployed to the Middle East, though they did not provide specifics on the particular region. “The guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg, which is part of the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, mistakenly fired on and hit the F/A-18,” Central Command said in a statement.

It is unclear how the cruiser was able to shoot down the friendly F/A-18, as ships and aircraft in a battle group are linked by radar and radio communication, Fox News reported.

Central Command further announced that U.S. naval assets had shot down several Houthi drones and an anti-ship cruise missile launched by the Iran-backed group. Houthi attacks on U.S. military assets have increased over the last year, forcing sailors to fire back on multiple occasions. Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, the Houthis have launched attacks on more than 100 merchant vessels in the Red Sea.

On Saturday evening, the U.S. intensified airstrikes on Houthi targets in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, which has been occupied by the rebel group for more than a decade. Central Command said the strikes targeted a “missile storage facility” and a “command-and-control facility.”

A Republican Congresswoman, who had been off the radar for six months, has finally been located. Rep. Kay Granger, representing Texas’s 12th Congressional District since 1997, vanished from public view around July this year. Her last known action in Congress was voting against an amendment to reduce the salary of a Deputy Assistant Administrator for Pesticide Programs to $1.

Curiosity piqued, a reporter from the Dallas Express set out to uncover Granger’s whereabouts. Carlos Turcios began his investigation by reaching out to her offices, only to be met with voicemails stating they were unavailable but grateful for the call. Determined, he visited her constituency office but found it deserted and lifeless.

Just when things seemed at a standstill, Turcios received a tip-off from a local resident that Granger was residing in an assisted living facility specializing in memory care. According to his report:

“We then received a tip from a Granger constituent who shared that the Congresswoman has been residing at a local memory care and assisted living home for some time after having been found wandering lost and confused in her former Cultural District/West 7th neighborhood.”

The Dallas Express team visited the facility to confirm if Granger was there and inquire about her stance on the spending bill. Upon arrival, two employees confirmed her residency but did not allow an interview regarding the current spending debate or how she planned to vote. Taylor Manziel, Assistant Executive Director of the senior living facility, affirmed to The Dallas Express that “This is her home.”

It remains unclear why neither Granger’s relatives nor staff disclosed her condition publicly. State Republican Executive Committeeman Rolando Garcia expressed disappointment over how events unfolded, calling it “a sad and humiliating way to end her political career.”

Granger had already announced she would retire at the end of this Congress session. Starting January, Craig Goldman—formerly part of the Texas House of Representatives—will take over as representative for Texas’s 12th Congressional District.

She expressed her frustration, saying they had to wait longer than expected to receive their loved ones’ remains because of this unexpected hold-up.

Roice recounted an interaction with a military officer who informed her that President Biden was napping on the plane during their wait. This revelation added to the emotional strain experienced by those present. The Daily Mail further reported Roice’s account of how she and others were left anticipating Biden’s appearance, only to be told about his nap.

“[Biden] made us wait an extra three hours to receive the bodies of our de*d family members because he couldn’t pull it together,” Roice said. Roice added that a military officer told her that Biden was napping on the plane.

“Roice said she and others were waiting for Biden to appear when a military officer told her he was napping on his plane,” the Daily Mail reported.

Adding to these sentiments, the father of Staff Sgt. Taylor Hoover voiced his discontentment over what felt like an endless wait for what he described as a “doddering old fool.” The frustration shared by these families highlights their disappointment and adds another layer to an already heart-wrenching situation.

He said,. “We sat in that office for what seemed like an eternity waiting on the doddering old fool.”
