Greenland’s Newly Elected PM Declares Trump ‘Will Not Acquire Greenland’

On Sunday, Greenland’s newly elected Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen dismissed President Donald Trump’s assertion that the US would acquire Greenland, emphasizing the country’s right to self-determination.

Nielsen pushed back in a  Facebook post, “President Trump says that the United States ‘will get Greenland.’ Let me be clear: The United States will not get it. We do not belong to anyone else. We decide our own future.”

He added, “We must not act out of fear. We must respond with peace, dignity and unity. And it is through these values that we must clearly, clearly and calmly show the American president that Greenland is ours. It was like that yesterday. That’s how it is today. And that’s how it will be in the future”

On Saturday, President Donald Trump stated that he believes the U.S. could take Denmark “without military force.”

“This is world peace, this is international security,” the president added, “I don’t take anything off the table.”

This sparked anger within Greenland’s new Democratic government, which is what inspired Nielsen’s social media post. This isn’t the new prime minister’s first take on the topic though.

Earlier in March, he rallied for European countries to stand with Greenland because “Greenland is not for sale.”
